Hello Sister Queen Lela
"As a Woman of Color, you cannot let the outside world define who you are, because if you do, you won't do or be anything." ~ Shola Lynch
Last night, we witnessed history in the making! Kamala Harris became the first Woman of Color to accept a major party's nomination for President of the United States. This incredible moment wasn’t just about one woman—it was about all of us. Kamala’s journey of Black Excellence, Black Power, and Black Joy was built on the dreams, the courage, and the hard work of so many before her. . . and a whole tribe of Black Women supporting her now. My Mother~ Mrs. Delores S Jackson~ would have been so proud! She worked so hard in the community and civil rights movement for social justice. . . and just plain compassionate care of others in need.
Let’s take a moment to honor two more special women . . .
Fannie Lou Hamer: In 1964, Fannie co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), bravely challenging the local Democratic Party’s attempts to block Black participation. By 1968, her relentless fight for justice turned her vision into reality—Mississippi sent its first integrated delegation to the Democratic National Convention. Fannie’s story reminds us that when we stand up, speak out, and refuse to be silenced, we can change the world.
Shirley Chisholm: In 1968, Shirley became the first African American woman elected to Congress, breaking barriers and making history. But she didn’t stop there. In 1972, she went even further, becoming the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president from one of the two major political parties. Shirley’s fearless spirit reminds us all to dream big, stay true to ourselves, and never let anyone tell us what we can or cannot do.
Like my Mommy . . . these women didn’t let the world define them. . . they defined themselves and, in doing so, paved the way for us to keep rising.
So, in the wise and powerful words of our beloved Michelle Obama. . . Do Something. . . Keep pushing forward, keep breaking barriers, and keep shining your light. The world is waiting for you, and your time is now.
Peace and Power,
Lela
